A recognized hallmark of cancer is genomic instability, which can be a driver of tumourigenesis, tumor heterogeneity and cancer cell evolution. Key molecular and structural mechanisms and processes associated with genomic instability include: dysregulation of DNA damage response (DDR) proteins and signaling pathways, changes to a cells epigenetic profile (including key histone modifications acetylation and methylation), and malfunctioning organelles tasked with protecting genomic structure (such as centrosomes). Alterations in these mechanisms protecting genomic integrity can alter key cellular profiles (including epigenetic, transcriptomic and immune) of tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME), altering treatment responses.
This Research Topic welcomes Original Research articles investigating and understanding novel and fundamental molecular and structural mechanisms/processes protecting genome integrity (including DNA damage repair mechanisms, cellular structures/organelles, chromatin regulation/organisation), with particular focus on the following topics:
• Identification and characterization of new signaling molecules
• Genome stability mediated alterations in tumor cells or TME profiles (including immune profiles)
• Epigenetic changes affecting genome stability
• Genome stability mechanisms affecting tumor cells and tumor microenvironment immune profiles
• Genome stability related biomarkers (to detect disease or stratify patients)
