Pentraxins are soluble extracellular pattern recognition molecules (PRM) that play important roles in innate immunity. An evolutionally-conserved domain and a ring-like multimer characterize pentraxins. Like other fluid-phase pattern recognition molecules, complement regulation, opsonization, agglutination, and neutralization are the major roles of pentraxins. Pentraxins interact with other PRM such as ficolins and mannose-binding lectin which cooperatively work with pentraxins.
The pentraxin C-reactive protein (CRP) is a non-specific biomarker for inflammation or tissue damage. Other pentraxins such as serum amyloid P-component (SAP) and pentraxin 3 (PTX3) also have diagnostic as well as therapeutic potentials. For example, PTX3 has been used for diagnostic markers of local inflammation and SAP is applied for the treatment of lung disorder.
The aim of this Research Topic is to cover the roles of pentraxins and pentraxin-associated proteins in diseases, for diagnosis purposes as well as their potential use for new therapeutics. We welcome authors to submit Original Research, Method, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, Clinical Trial and Case Report articles focusing on, but not be limited to:
• Role of pentraxins and pentraxin-associated proteins in diseases
• Potential uses of pentraxins and pentraxin-associated proteins for diagnosis
• Potential uses of pentraxins and pentraxin-associated proteins as therapeutics
