In 1993 the Swedish physiologist Björn Folkow (1921-2012) wrote in Physiological Reviews (73(4):725-65) ‘.. in humans, it is particularly difficult to differentiate between manifestations of aging per se and symptoms of morbidity, especially at higher ages when morbidity is common’.
The articles in this issue of Frontiers’ Clinical and Translational Physiology’ review human in-vivo physiological studies aiming at unraveling body’s adaptation to physical exercise from different viewpoints.
By doing so these studies in healthy subjects as well as in patients with cardiovascular and/or metabolic disease are to be considered as a serious attempt to address directly some of the difficulties as proposed by Folkow in understanding how the human body works and how it is being affected by ageing and disease.
Topic Editor Dr. James Fisher has received funding from BMS-Pfizer Alliance for an investigator-led research project in the area of atrial fibrillation and cerebral blood flow regulation. Topic Editor Dr. Johannes J. Van Lieshout declares no competing interests with regards to the Research Topic subject.
