The importance of chronobiology is eventually widely recognized, and particularly, there is an ever-increasing awareness of daytime-dependent changes in memory processes (acquisition, consolidation and memory retrieval) across species. However, while a wealth of data already exists on the principal mechanisms behind such memory processes, little is known about the molecular mechanisms modulating the clearly documented day-time variations in the efficiency of memory processing. We would like to cover the topic from two different point of views, namely a phylogenetic approach, followed by an in depth analysis of what we know about the circadian modulation of memory storage in the mammalian brain, including human cognition.
