Bone is a living tissue which performs mechanical, metabolic and protective functions in our body. Bone cells are composed of osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes and are organized in a dynamic process called bone remodeling. Disruption of bone remodeling leads to bone diseases and associated complications such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bone tumors and rare bone diseases.
Bone remodeling is a vastly growing research area. It brings together the traditional fields of anatomy and biomechanics with the complex fields of endocrine and developmental biology. To date, increasing factors have been revealed to participate in bone remodeling such as osteocalcin, sclerostin, Semaphorin 4D (SEMA4D) and non-coding RNAs. These factors facilitate the mechanistic understanding of bone diseases and in doing so, attract attention as promising molecular targets. With these advances in bone remodeling, translational medicine strategies, such as targeted therapies and biologic agents, are showing great potential for combating bone diseases and associated complications.
The aim of this Research Topic is to cover promising and emerging trends for identifying molecular mechanisms and targets in bone remodeling as well as new therapies for bone disease and associated complications. It is highly recommended that article submissions perform in-depth signalling studies, multi-omics, high-throughput screening, translational medicine and precision medicine to achieve better understanding and treatment of bone diseases and associated complications.
