Bipolar disorder is a severe mental illness, with significant morbidity, and is a leading cause of disability. Comprehensive clinical evaluation and synthesis of the evidence base remain the foundation for optimal treatment outcomes for patients with bipolar disorder. There have been significant advancements in the biological understanding of bipolar disorder, with neuroimaging, and genomics. Genomic and other biomarkers of drug response are of increasing clinical interest and have the potential to individualize treatment recommendations with greater precision for patients with bipolar disorder, based on their biology.
This Research Topic will focus on the neurobiological underpinnings of bipolar disorder and its treatment with emphasis on
- Functional and connectivity neuroimaging
- Genomics and pharmacogenomics
- Cellular and animal studies
- Clinical trials with focus in precision medicine
Both original and review studies of this nature and related topics will be welcomed. This Research Topic will be a mix of focused review and original findings highlighting the neurobiology of bipolar disorder, as well as the treatment options for bipolar disorder. Studies highlighting cutting edge research to help gain further insight into this important illness and treatment outcome would be given priority.
