Skull tumors comprise a wide variety of different histologies, each with distinct clinical, radiological and prognostic features. Management of skull base tumors is challenging and often requires a multidisciplinary approach. In recent years there have been major advances in the diagnosis and treatment of skull base tumors, which have resulted in improved survival and quality of life. The introduction of endoscopic transnasal surgery has had a major impact on the surgical approach to skull base tumors, making these tumors more accessible with significantly reduced morbidity. Furthermore, new radiation technologies allow for improved tumor delineation with reduced toxicity. Finally, advances in the understanding of the biology and genomics of skull base tumors have created opportunities for targeted agents to be utilized in cases of unresectable/metastatic disease. By incorporating novel technologies, as well as new surgical skills, the treatment paradigm for skull base tumors has shifted dramatically. The current practice necessitates a precision approach towards skull base tumors, taking into account both patient and tumor factors in order to ensure optimal treatment.
This article collection will comprehensively summarize the state-of-the-art in skull base tumors echoed by leaders in the field around the globe. Emphasis should be made on novel approaches and technologies in the fields of endoscopic surgery, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, diagnostic imaging as well as 3D planning and quality of life. We would like the authors to share their own clinical experience as well as basic and translational knowledge and focus on future directions in the field of skull base tumors.
