This Research Topic presents selected original research articles from the 6th Biennial Symposium of the International Society for River Science in Vienna in September 2019
Riverine ecosystems are highly complex, coupled socio-ecological systems with a long history of human use and co-evolutionary processes worldwide.
Intense use has modified riverine landscapes tremendously and affected ecosystem functions and biodiversity. Recent drivers of change, such as climate and land use change, are also affecting riverine systems and require new approaches and solutions in ecosystem management to harmonize ecosystem degradation and human requirements considering at the same time their critical role for aquatic biodiversity.
The focus of this Research Topic will cover the following themes:
- New insights into ecosystem functions,
- Changes in biodiversity,
- New methodological approaches to assess these changes
- Examples of management interventions to achieve a more sustainable development of riverine landscapes.
Spontaneous submissions to this Research Topic will be considered by the Topic Editors as long as they accurately reflect the scope as described above.
