This Research Topic provides review articles from keynote speakers at the International Veterinary Immunology Conference, IVIS-2019, held in Seattle, WA. Recognizing the many constraints on global travel, this special open-access issue provides an opportunity to make information from this conference available to the global veterinary immunology community. Veterinary immunology encompasses a broad range of domestic and wild species, impacting the health of not only animals but also humans and the environment. Therefore, information provided in this issue is relevant to scientists beyond the immediate community of veterinary immunology.
Keynote speakers at IVIS-2019 were selected to highlight recent advances in technologies and paradigms that are shaping future research in veterinary immunology. Technologies transforming the analysis of host-pathogen interactions and immune mechanisms mediating these interactions were reviewed. Novel conceptual approaches to defining protective immune responses and the application of these approaches to the design and delivery of vaccine were also highlighted. A protective response to pathogens or non-infectious disease requires integrated innate and adaptive immune responses. Examples of novel animal models that facilitate an analysis of this immune complexity and temporal regulation of responses were also highlighted. The technologies and concepts reviewed hold the promise of not only accelerating knowledge generation but to also transform application of this knowledge to more effective strategies to control the global burden of infectious disease.
Each author provides background information on the relevance of their topic and current constraints limiting research investigations. The conceptual and/or methodological novelty of their science and how it changes scientific investigations are highlighted through discussions of specific research projects or questions. Future applications that may change the way we ask questions, analyze immune responses, or translate knowledge to practical applications are also discussed.
We acknowledge the initiation and support of this Research Topic by the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS). We hereby state publicly that the IUIS has had no editorial input in articles included in this Research Topic, thus ensuring that all aspects of this Research Topic are evaluated objectively, unbiased by any specific policy or opinion of the IUIS.
