Our ability to maintain balance declines when we grow older. Balance impairments lead to reduced mobility and falls and resulting economical, societal and personal costs. While we know that ageing leads to reductions in e.g. muscle mass, vision and reaction time, the mechanisms underlying a subsequent decline in balance remain unclear. An improved understanding of balance with ageing, its relationship with falls and fall risk and effective interventions to remediate this risk, will lead to improved interventions and better outcomes for older people.
This Research Topic aims to collect diverse contributions reflecting the interdisciplinary research area of balance and ageing. We are particularly interested in research focusing on:
1) Predicting which (subgroups of) people are at risk for balance decline and/or falls
2) Understanding why (subgroups of) people are at risk for balance decline and/or falls
3) Treating or remediating balance decline to prevent falls, either by training programs or wearable technology (exoskeletons etc.)
We believe that the research collected under this Research Topic will bridge disciplines and boost interdisciplinary research in this field.
