Globalization, urbanization, and technological advancement have changed human resource practices in the last few decades. Starting from the late 20th century, the traditional employer-employee relationship was modified towards non-standard work arrangements, such as temporary or part-time jobs that are characterized by precarity and lack of security.
Previous studies have demonstrated the existence of adverse effects in health and safety of workers under non-standard work arrangements, but the underlying mechanisms are not yet fully elucidated. Thus, there is a need to investigate these effects (acute and/or long-term) on individuals implicated in such employment terms, especially since the latter belong usually to vulnerable societal groups, such as long-term unemployed, immigrants, the
elderly etc.
Overall, the aim of this Research Topic is to gather current research
focusing on non-standard employment in relation to general health,
occupational health and safety, quality of life and other indices, in order to highlight the adverse effects and to help design a preventive strategy.
