This Research Topic aims to collect selected contributions from
GRC2019, the
15th Gatersleben Research Conference on Applied Bioinformatics in Crops, held in Gatersleben, Germany, on March 18
th-20
th, 2019.
In the age of Big Data, Bioinformatics has become a crucial integral part of plant and crop science research. Vast amounts of data are scattered across hundreds of unstructured data sets, biological databases and thousands of scientific journals. Continuously advancing high-throughput technologies do not only increase the quantity of data but also generate data of high-dimensional complexity. Bioinformatics faces the challenges of Big Data in many terms, such as data acquisition, storage, modeling, integration, analysis and FAIR data sharing by offering powerful methods, tools and pipelines up to highly integrative platforms and frameworks. In this respect, bioinformatics will influence plant science and lead to significant crop improvements.
The GRC2019 was explicitly dedicated to current and future-oriented developments in applied bioinformatics aiding profound knowledge and insight gain of crops as highly complex molecular systems. In this Research Topic, we like to pool important advancements that have been presented and discussed at the GRC2019. Therefore, we welcome contributions on the following aspects:
• Biodiversity and information systems
• Distributed computing
• Tools and infrastructures
• Breeding informatics
• Image-based analysis and data visualization
• Systems biology and modeling
Contributors are welcome to submit Original Research, Method, Opinion, and Review articles (including Mini Reviews). Please note that submissions to this Research Topic are limited to the conference attendees and their co-authors.
