About this Research Topic
The first edition was focused on experimental models of epilepsy and comorbidities, which gave an overview of current knowledge and approaches for studying epilepsy and related comorbidities and highlighted the role of numerous experimental and clinical studies in elucidating novel mechanistic insights about the pathophysiology of these conditions.
While developing a second edition, we aim to focus on the translational perspective of research in this domain. We again welcome the scientific community to contribute to the topic with their basic discoveries and clinical findings to aid the translational research. It is projected to improve the quality of life of the patients and reduce the global burden of epilepsy and its associated comorbidities.
Background:
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease and patients with epilepsy have an increased risk for cognitive, behavioral, and psychosocial disorders that can adversely impact the quality of life. In addition, patients also reported to have other complications such as sexual function decline and experience emotional and mental setbacks. Many antiepileptic drugs are found to have a role in aggravating psychiatric symptoms. Experimental studies are used to study the relationship between epilepsy and related comorbidities and play an important role to answer translational questions about epilepsy.
Goal:
The aim of this Research Topic is to highlight basic, clinical and translational research involved in studying epilepsy and other seizure disorders. Translational research is an important aspect of epilepsy research and expected to play a key role in improving the quality of life of the patients. It is also expected to help in understanding the complexity of the condition and its comorbidities. Discovery of novel potential antiepileptics and their mechanism will also be included in this special topic.
Scope:
In this issue, we welcome submissions from basic, clinical and translational studies and review papers that summarize current knowledge and point out gaps in understanding of epilepsy-associated comorbidities and related research for novel drug discovery.
