The legume family contains a number of important crops as well as models for basic research into biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen via symbioses with soil-borne microorganisms. The upcoming publications of several common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) genomes and for chickpea (Cicer arietinum) motivate this Legume Genome issue of Frontiers in Plant Genetics and Genomics.
