On behalf of the Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Pharmacology, the University of Catania and his family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of speciality chief editor (Experimental Pharmacology and Drug Discovery), Salvatore “Totò” Salomone. Salvatore died 15 May 2022, after an extreme fight against the devastating consequences of a cerebral haemorrhage which occurred from the rupture of an aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery about a month ago. Totò was a noble person, with rare gifts of balance and generosity in both his work and his family. He was the perfect friend, always available. He was ready to fill gaps and heal fractures in relationships between people and, in particular, between colleagues and collaborators. Graduating in Medicine and Surgery and specializing in Internal Medicine in Catania, he obtained a PhD at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. He carried out a long period of research at the Stroke and Neurovascular Regulation Laboratory of the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA) where he worked as Assistant in Pharmacology. In 1997 he beat the competition as a researcher of Pharmacology and then, in 2007, he became an Associate Professor. On 4 January 2016 […]

By Simona Pesce, Frontiers writer Photo of snow taken by crew of the International Space Station. Image: NASA With the help of some ants, NASA scientists have developed an innovative concept to measure exactly how deep the snow layer is covering sea ice and mountains using a lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) instrument in space. The findings, published in Frontiers in Remote Sensing, reveal this new method will have several applications and provide more accurate measurements on the evolution of snowpack as a result of the climate crisis and better monitoring of water resources globally. Ants may be the unlikely heroes when it comes to better understanding the health of our planet in the midst of a climate crisis. In a paper published to Frontiers in Remote Sensing, a team of scientists, including those from NASA, have found a way to estimate the depth of snow from orbit using ants deep underground. One member of the team is Yongxiang Hu from NASA’s Langley Research Center who drew inspiration from physics and biology to create a unique snow depth model. A previously developed model found that the average time an ant walks around inside the colony before coming back is roughly […]

Image: Shutterstock.com Online Seminar Series 25th May – 22nd June 2022 This seminar series is presented by field chief editor of the Frontiers in Virtual Reality journal, Prof Mel Slater and members of the GuestXR European Project. By now we are likely to have come across horror stories from ‘the metaverse‘ about how easy it is to encounter abuse, racism, misogyny, and have an overall unpleasant experience. On the other hand, social virtual environments have been studied for many years and there is evidence about how people behave in virtual meetings. GuestXR is carrying out research towards how to make immersive virtual meetings realize the goals of the participants. Normally virtual meetings have a purpose, even if that is entertainment, and GuestXR has the ambitious aim of intervening in such meetings to make them fit for their purpose. In this seminar series, partners from the GuestXR project will speak about their early work on these issues, covering a review of virtual meetings (‘collaborative virtual environments’), the utility of agent based models for social modeling, what we can learn from the neuroscience of interpersonal interaction, the role of deep learning for virtual humans, and reflections on the ethical aspects. Image: Shutterstock Frontiers in Built Environment is delighted to reveal the winners of the fourth Joseph M Sussman Prize celebrating the best articles published in the Transportation and Transit Systems section of the journal: Aleksandar Bauranov, Steven Parks, Xuan Jiang, Jasenka Rakas, Marta C González: “Quantifying the Resilience of the US Domestic Aviation Network During the Covid-19 Pandemic” The award-winning study selected this year provides valuable insights into the impacts of Covid-19 pandemic on the United States air transportation network. “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, airlines dramatically reduced their flights, especially between March and August 2020. As a result, 24% of airports closed. However, we found that the US aviation network’s efficiency dropped by only 5%, where efficiency is measured as the availability of paths between any two chosen airports. Maintaining high efficiency incurred a cost, causing emissions per passenger to be doubled. We also observed that an airport’s size was by far the best predictor of its closure, with smaller, regional airports being most adversely affected. Grants administered by the Federal Aviation Administration are the second best predictor in our model, indicating that financial aid distributed to airports in some cases made a difference between them closing and remaining open. Our methods can be used to […]

Frontiers in Microbiology warmly welcomes our new Field Chief Editor, Prof. Paul D. Cotter, the Head of Food Biosciences at Teagasc and a Principal Investigator with APC Microbiome Ireland, Vistamilk and Food for Health Ireland. On this occasion, we would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our retiring Field Chief Editor, Prof. Martin G. Klotz who had been an inspiration and motivation to not only the editorial board members but also the entire journal team for the past 11 years. His fervent approach, passion for this field of science and constant feedback are some of the vital reasons that drove the success of this journal from its infancy to full growth. In his words, “After a humble beginning, the journal has matured into a widely read and cited destination venue, presenting solid science in presently 18 specialty sections, each directed by Chief Editors who lead boards of dedicated Associate editors and Review editors, selected based on their expertise and standing in the peer community. It will continue to take more than a village and relentless focus on quality (authenticity, originality & reproducibility) of what the peer community will find published in Frontiers in Microbiology – I am confident […]
Open science policy

We continue to support UKRI’s open access policy, which will see all peer-reviewed research articles resulting from its funding made universally and freely accessible to people everywhere from today. The spirit of Plan S and the open access movement continue to make progress. UKRI should be commended for its position and support of open access’s original model. Barriers to research by way of expensive paywalls impair scientific discovery. The rapid and free dissemination of research and data around COVID-19 resulted in the fastest vaccine development in human history. The same dynamic of international collaboration must be extended to all research on all critical societal challenges, such as cancer and climate change. UKRI’s policy is simple, effective and enforceable; and it provides a framework for scientific publishing that addresses the urgency of the challenges that confront society. We can be optimistic that this policy will reinforce the growing call – by the Plan S signatories and others – to combat the efforts of subscription publishers to indefinitely extend the harmful status quo of paywalled access to knowledge, for example through the use of commercial tactics such as “transformative agreements.” Dr. Frederick Fenter, chief executive editor, Frontiers ENDS. Frontiers is the 3rd […]
