This cross-sectional study investigates the relationships among social capital, social support, community sense, social desirability, and negative emotions in the elderly, as well as the mediating and moderating roles these factors play. A survey was conducted with 904 elderly individuals from Liaoning province, China, using the Geriatric Depression Scale-10 (GDS-10), the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), the Brief Sense of Community Scale (BSCS), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MCSDS). The results revealed that social capital and social support were significantly negatively correlated with negative emotions, with social support acting as a mediator between social capital and negative emotions. Community sense and social desirability significantly moderated the relationship between social support and negative emotions. The findings suggest that enhancing social capital, social support, community sense, and social desirability can effectively reduce negative emotions in elderly individuals, providing empirical support for mental health interventions.
