TITLE=Case Report: Tropheryma whipplei Hide in an AIDS Patient With Pneumocystis Pneumonia

ABSTRACT=<p><bold>Introduction:</bold><italic>Pneumocystis</italic> pneumonia (PCP) is one of the most common opportunistic infections in HIV-infected patients. However, coinfection with <italic>Tropheryma whipplei</italic> is infrequent in AIDS patients with PCP.</p><p><bold>Case Presentation:</bold> We report a 28-year-old male AIDS patient coinfected with <italic>T. whipplei</italic> and <italic>Pneumocystis jirovecii</italic> diagnosed in the bronchoalveolar lavage. After sulfamethoxazole–trimethoprim and meropenem treatment, the patient showed clinical improvement in 2 weeks.</p><p><bold>Conclusion:</bold> Clinicians need to be alert to the occurrence of <italic>T. whipplei</italic> infection in AIDS patients with PCP and timely diagnosis and antibacterial treatments are essential. This case may help clinicians for timely diagnosis of the coinfection of <italic>T. whipplei</italic> and <italic>P. jirovecii</italic> in AIDS patients.</p>
