Usability Evaluation Methods and Life Skills for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A Systematic Literature Review

    Introduction: Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often show a strong affinity for software applications, yet research frequently overlooks the DSM-5 challenges related to communication, social interaction, and behavior when designing these applications.Objective: This systematic literature review (SLR) investigates usability evaluation methods (UEMs) and life skills in individuals with ASD, focusing on social interaction, communication, and behavioral domains.Methods: For this SLR, we defined the inclusion and exclusion criteria using the Tollgate approach and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews standards. We used the following databases: Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Springer Link, Science Direct, and Google Scholar.We retrieved 3,436 articles and included 65 papers in this SLR after applying the inclusion criteria. Our findings indicate that questionnaires are the most commonly used usability evaluation methods (UEMs) for individuals with ASD, accounting for 24.18% of utilization. Furthermore, UEMs that target social interaction and communication issues among ASD users are substantially more prevalent than those addressing other challenges.This SLR enhances our understanding of UEMs used for social interaction, communication, and behavioral for individuals with ASD.Based on these findings and analysis, developers can customize applications to enhance the social, communication, and behavioral skills of individuals with ASD.
