Can Latin America Play a More Influential Role in a Shifting World Order?
Provisionally accepted- Tecnologico de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico
Latin America has played a secondary role in international relations, but emerging challenges to a unipolar world order in today's globalized world may open greater space for influence in managing the critical challenges of economic competition, transnational security and conflict. This article analyzes the changes in geopolitical relations with a focus on Latin America's role in the global order. The first part explores the relations between Latin America and the great powers in the contemporary global systemic configuration. The second part analyzes Latin America's interests, strategic vision, and narratives towards the rest of the world and the consequences that derive from its economic competition, energy resources, the importance of nearshoring, internal and international security, and ideological factors linked to the region. Finally, it will attempt to answer the question of whether, with the rising impact of the Global South, the influence of growing partnerships between countries, and political and ideological changes, Latin America has the potential to play a more important role than in the past.
