The loss of submerged macrophytes from freshwater ecosystems is accelerating owing to the combined effects of eutrophication and climate change. Submerged macrophytes depend on spring clear water; however, increased water temperatures and excessive phosphorus (P) inputs often lead to the dominance of phytoplankton.
