ABSTRACT=<p>A simple model is introduced for the fields of a chirped laser pulse. As an application, dynamics of laser-acceleration of a single electron by the fields of a pulse, with a sin<sup>4</sup> envelope, is investigated. Multi-GeV energy gains from interaction with pulses of peak intensity <inline-formula><mml:math id="M1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>I</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msub><mml:mo>~</mml:mo><mml:mn>1</mml:mn><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>20</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:math></inline-formula> W/cm<sup>2</sup>, are reported.</p>
