Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine that plays both anti- and pro-inflammatory roles. Due to the restricted expression of membrane IL-6 receptor (IL-6R), most pro-inflammatory functions of IL-6 are attributed to its association with soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R).
