Environmental regulations, as an important means of government environmental governance, can compel enterprises to engage in green innovation, and media coverage on "dual carbon" can subtly promote energy enterprises to improve their innovative behavior. This study uses data from Chinese energy listed companies from 2011 to 2022 to analyze the relationship between media coverage and green innovation behavior of energy enterprises under the "dual carbon" target, as well as the mediating effect of government environmental regulations and corporate R&D investment on green innovation behavior of energy enterprises. In addition, we further explored the heterogeneous effects of different energy enterprises from the perspectives of regions, ownership, and industry. The results indicate that, firstly, media coverage has a significant promoting effect on the green innovation behavior of energy enterprises, with a greater incentive effect on strategic green innovation behavior. Secondly, both research and development investment and environmental regulations enhance the positive impact of media coverage on green innovation. Finally, the heterogeneity analysis suggests that media coverage has a more pronounced promoting effect on the green innovation behavior of state-owned enterprises, enterprises in eastern regions, and new energy enterprises. This illustrates that media coverage has varying effects on energy enterprises with different property rights, regions, and industry types.
