Microalgae cultivation in municipal, industrial, and agricultural wastewater is an emerging, highly effective approach for resource recovery and concomitant bioenergy generation. Wastewater effluents represent ideal sources of nutrients (especially nitrogen and phosphorous) for eukaryotic green algal species. However, the recovery performance of photosynthetic green algae is strongly dependent on the associated bacterial partners present in the effluents. Algal microbiome is a pivotal part of the algae holobiont and has a key role in modulating algal growth and functions in nature. There has been no comprehensive study on the importance of microbial communities supporting the algal hosts for the bulk of the time wastewater treatment methods have been in use.
