Northeast India, having a greatly varying topography with diverse river systems, comes under the Eastern Himalaya Freshwater Biodiversity Hotspot. The region is a home to many species of Nemacheiline fishes. Of the Nemacheiline fishes, Mustura Kottelat is a newly erected genus. There are eight species of Mustura occurring in northeast India which were placed earlier in the genus Physoschistura. Morphological characterizations of Mustura were studied employing classical taxonomic approach and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A new species Mustura sp. nov. of the genus Mustura is expected in the present study. The morphological characters manifested in the form of oromandibular structures, pectoral fins, free posterior chamber and the suborbital flaps of M. chindwinensis, M. dikrongensis, M. tigrina, M. tuivaiensis and M. sp. nov. have been studied. The SEM study on the different species of Mustura reveals the presence of unculi on both the jaws and taste buds on the lips and barbels. The generic status of M. chindwinensis, M. dikrongensis, M. tigrina and M. tuivaiensis are discussed in detail and ascertained. However, since the genus Mustura is at its infancy, we conclude that further studies on the Nemacheilid Mustura of the region are necessary.
