Event Abstract

CLINICAL NUTRITION PROGRAM IMPROVES POST CONCUSSION SYMPTOMS IN 23 YEAR OLD FEMALE

  • 1 Carrick Institute, United States

Background: A 23 year old woman presented with a history five concussions over a seven year period. She complained of abnormal male pattern hair growth, premenstrual irritability, brain fog, sleep problems and low energy remediated by eating or exercising. She was taking fish oil, a multivitamin and CBD oil. Her diet was unrestricted. Methods: Ingestion of Th2 cytokine boosters provoked her symptoms. Blood chemistry revealed high thyroid peroxidase antibodies (131 IU/mL), thyroglobulin antibodies (1.8 IU/mL), a normal thyroid panel, and clinically significantly low LDH (135 IU/L), ferritin (29 ng/mL), cholesterol 141 (mg/dL), and triglycerides (48 mg/dl). Dried urine testing for hormones revealed high levels of alpha pregnanediol, DHEA sulfate, estrone, estradiol, androsterone, etiocholanolone, testosterone, 5-alpha DHT, 5-alpha androstanediol, and 5-beta androstanediol. Total metabolized cortisol was normal. Methods: She was placed on anti-inflammatory diet and a supplement protocol utilizing betaine HCl with pepsin, turmeric, resveratrol, iron, glutathione, sublingual vitamin D, omega 3 fatty acids, an adaptogen formula, a multi-nutrient formula to support glucose utilization and a multi-nutrient formula to support hepatic biotransformation. Results: After 45 days, the patient reported significant improvement in her premenstrual symptoms. She also noted that her sleep had normalized and daytime energy had improved. At that time, her LDH and ferritin had normalized. Conclusion: The author recommends further investigation into diet and supplementation in the treatment of chronic post concussion symptoms.
