Community and Publication Fees

Core Philosophy

Frontiers is dedicated to providing global access to the highest quality research papers. In order to achieve this, articles are first subjected to the peer review process and are then edited, published and evaluated in terms of their scientific excellence and their social relevance.

To enable open access to all articles, Frontiers has adopted an author-pay model as a starting point whereby authors or research sponsors cover the costs associated with the review and subsequent publication of their articles. Frontiers will strive to keep costs as low as possible to ensure that publication costs do not become an obstacle to publishing.

Community Fee

The Community Fee is currently fully subsidized by Frontiers Research Foundation for articles submitted by any Authors or Frontiers Editors. The Community Fee adds to a pool of funds which is used in general to support the highest quality Frontiers Review Service and specifically to award prizes to Chief and Associate Editors for their work on the articles.

Publishing Fee
A Publishing Fee of €1'600 is the full charge to cover the costs associated with editing, publishing, archiving, and evaluation of the article as well as maintaining the most advanced Internet site in online publishing and supporting the Frontiers Academic Environment. The Publishing Fee in 2009 will be subsidized by 40% for all articles submitted by Frontiers Editors (who are the corresponding author on the article) and by 25% for articles submitted by any other Authors.

Unlike other journals, there are no extra hidden costs in Frontiers. For example, Frontiers does not charge for color figures which typically cost about $500-$1000 per figure in most subscription-based journals. Further, if your article is selected by the Frontiers Evaluation System to be published in a higher tier Frontiers journal, further publication costs will be borne by Frontiers.

Frontiers Publishing Grant - Waivers
Authors who can demonstrate their inability to bear the publication costs may apply to the Frontiers Research Foundation for a Frontiers Publishing Grant, which may cover all or part of the Community and Publishing Fees. This grant will be considered if the article is accepted for publication. The grant may allow for a full waiver or a part waiver depending on the financial capability of all the authors on the paper.

Valid reasons for granting a complete or partial waiver include:
  1. up to 100% waiver if the corresponding author is from a country with small economy (total 2005 GDP less than US $100 billion) or that is in the World Bank's low income categories (see this reference or download the Country classification table).
  2. up to 50% waiver if the corresponding author is from a country with medium economy or that is in the World Bank's lower-middle income categories (see this reference or download the Country classification table).

The authors should provide the name of the grant/institution and a short explanatory paragraph why the processing fees cannot be afforded to editorial.office@frontiersin.org.
