A novel recording concept for ERP based clinical diagnostics

During the last couple of decades, cognitive brain research has gained understanding of neural processes underlying normal and abnormal cognitive functions. Methods like MEG, MRI, fMRI and PET have been successfully used even on a single patient level in some specific conditions. However, the use of these methods is limited in clinical neuropsychology, since they are based on very expensive infrastructure and require specialized users. Thus, they cannot be used for large widespread research volumes in neuropsychological disorders, like ADHD or dyslexia, since the number of potential diagnosed patients can be as high as 15% of the population. Currently, ERP-based methods for single-patient diagnosis are usually imprecise. This study presents a novel concept for ERP recordings and ERP-based clinical diagnostics. The concept has been used to optimize the setup for the measurement of a discrimination profile of patients using mismatch negativity (MMN). Additionally, the setup can record the auditory brainstem response (ABR). Furthermore, the concept can be used for optimization of the recording setup for any kind of cognitive brain response. The novel concept enables bringing brain recording methods from specialized departments to the patients. The setup requires no infrastructure, and thus lower expenses. As a result, the concept also enables a large number of identical recording units, thus creating more convincing databases. It is also more mobile and more reliable for individual-level diagnostics than the current clinical routine systems.
