Comparing ERPs elicited in a steady state paradigm with the effects of changing emotional stimulation

Physiological correlates of emotional experience induced by visual stimuli selected from IAPS for valence, (positive, neutral, sadness and disgust) and arousal level (high and low) are studied on Event Related Potentials waveforms elicited by repeated presentation of stimuli belonging to the same affective category, a paradigm inspired on steady state potentials. A sample of 16 healthy participants observed the stimuli and had additionally a subjective evaluation task. EEG was recorded in Fz, Cz and Pz (10-20 SI) leads referred to the left mastoid. The samples of EEG records obtained during the interval defined as 150ms prior stimuli and 1 sec post stimuli were averaged separately for each stimuli category and corrected for the 150 msec prestimulus baseline. ANOVAs repeated measures performed over amplitude (maximum positive potentials within the interval of 300-700 msec) and latencies of LPP elicited by each one of the eight stimuli categories in this paradigm showed significant effects of specific emotional category in which negative emotional categories elicited the highest amplitude of LPP in different EEG leads, sadness in Frontal EEG channel, and disgust in Parietal lead. The lowest amplitude LPP was recorded in response to neutral stimuli. These results seem to point to an effect of negative emotional categories with a different distribution of waveforms as described for sadness and disgust. The effects of positive emotional categories, not studied in experimental conditions described above, namely love in dual relations and emotions related to sports and group relations (stimuli selected from IAPS for equivalent levels of positive valence and high arousal in one case and in a second case, low arousal level) are further studied in a sample of healthy participants using, this time, the classical oddball experimental paradigm in which stimuli categories are presented in random sequences with complementary probabilities. For each arousal level, in four distinct experimental conditions stimuli’ category probability are reversed (respectively 20%-80% respectively for love and sports emotions in one case and the reverse in another experimental condition. Subjective evaluative response and EEG data were recorded as described before. For high arousal level, in each case, either occurring with low probability (0.2, see Figure 1, left panel) or with high probability (0.8, Figure 1, right panel) love category stimuli elicited the highest amplitude of LPP in Pz lead. This result is interpreted as reflecting the prevalence of stimuli intrinsic motivational value over the effects of changing stimulation from a frequent monotonous stimuli category in what concerns love emotions. The effects of arousal level are further studied comparing ERPs waveforms elicited by low arousal level stimuli of love and sports emotion categories leading to a similar result: thus far, in a way that seems to be independent from probability of occurrence love stimuli elicit the highest amplitude of LPP waveforms.
